Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT)

Medium-chain triglycerides, or in their acronym MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides), have already been encountered and described in the course of discussion. These are those lipids that are normally deposited inside muscle cells as an energy supply.

Function

According to some (unconfirmed) studies, if taken together with carbohydrates during loading, they can improve performance. Presumably this is because they provide an additional energy supply which the body can draw on. If taken in excessive quantities, however, they may even have a counterproductiveeffect.

Negative notes

Adverse effects, sometimes serious, on the digestive system have been reported, so its use is not recommended.

Form and posology

MCT supplements are commercially available in the form of soluble powders and oils. There are no general guidelines for taking this product, except for the recommendation never to exceed 80g/day to avoid unpleasant side effects.
