Pyruvate

When discussing aerobic metabolism, we saw that pyruvate, also known as pyruvic acid, is the end product of glucose and glucose-6-phosphate metabolism.

Function

Although the mechanism of action is unclear, the intake of exogenous pyruvate promotes fat oxidation. It should be made clear, however, that pyruvate supplements have no influence on the body’s calorie consumption.

Negative notes

If taken in high doses, gastrointestinal complaints are common. Unfortunately, some studies (not all) show real efficacy only at such dosages. In conclusion, the use of this product may not be suitable for most people, not only because of the adverse health effects, but also because of the high expense a high dosage may entail.

Form and dosage

Pyruvate supplements are mainly available in tablet form. Some studies show that pyruvate is effective in increasing lipid oxidation even at dosages as low as 6g/day, but, as already mentioned above, according to others, a dosage even higher than 30g/day would be necessary, which is frequently associated with digestive disorders.
