As already mentioned, citrulline malate has the potential to improve endurance performance, especially in interval training. As an arginine precursor, however, it also has an indirect function in stimulating nitric oxide production mechanisms. Unfortunately, although arginine levels increase more following supplementation with citrulline malate than with arginine itself, the effect on nitric oxide is much less in the former case. As mentioned, citrulline malate has no adverse effects, and as far as dosage is concerned, the same guidance as given in the section on supplements for direct influence on athletic performance applies.
