This supplement is extracted from the bark of a particular African tree called yohimbe.
Function
Yohimbine performs its function through different mechanisms. Among them, the one that affects thermogenesis concerns the calories burned through physical activity.
Negative notes
The main side effects include incompatibility with certain medications such as hypotensives and antidepressants. If one is undergoing therapy with such drugs, it would be advisable to refrain from taking yohimbine products at the same time. Effects on the cardiovascular system, such as tachycardia and hypertension, but also anxiety and tremors, are also possible. Finally, the most surprising thing of all is the pro-insulinemic effect of yohimbine: this substance, in fact, has a stimulating action on noradrenaline (which also plays a role in weight loss), which is an insulin antagonist. At least theoretically, therefore, it would be possible that the effect on insulin prevails over that on norepinephrine to such an extent that it favours the addition of new fat mass rather than its disposal. One suggestion would be to take yohimbine away from meals so as to minimise its pro-insulinemic action.
Form and dosage
Yohimbine is also mainly available in tablet form. Research suggests the intake of 20mg/day of yohimbine, divided into four administrations of 5mg each.
