Gymnema sylvestris

Gymnema sylvestris, also called Gymnema silvestre or simply gymnema, is a plant native to India, containing a biologically active substance called gymnemic acid. Its mechanism of action has been relatively little studied, but nevertheless, as it has often given satisfactory results, it is worth considering.

Function

Ye (2001) notes the ability of this supplement to decrease the attractiveness of sweet foods (although, in fact, this has only been demonstrated in laboratory animals). In addition, after taking gymnema, someone has found a drop in blood sugar, so it is assumed that it possesses the ability to block the absorption of carbohydrates.

Negative notes

There are no known side effects of Gymnema sylvestris.

Form and posology

Gymnema sylvestris is available on the market in tablet, powder and leaf form for herbal tea preparation. We recommend an intake of Gymnema sylvestris titrated to at least 24% gymnemic acid, in an amount between 400 and 600mg/day.
